It's not you - it's me

Dear 2008,

In the beginning when the weather started getting warmer it was looking like 2008 might have been the year that could have made up for 2007.  (Which was a tough year).  I really hoped this was it!  I had been through some tough times in 2007 and I was ready to move on.  The down time in the early part of the year gave me a chance to get organized and when things did start picking up in February or March I was prepared and ready to go.  In May one of my sons returned and got out of the service, transactions were picking up, I think I closed four in April, interest rates were decent I was really enjoying 2008.

However, as the summer wagered on it seemed like the beginning of the year was the highlight.  In fact forPhoto provided by FlyGuy92586 with permission on Flickr the past few months it has pretty much sucked.  Transactions fell apart and mortgage guidelines changed.  It became harder for a buyer to qualify and sellers did not want to reduce their prices.  I can't blame them for that.

I found in order to make up for the loss of income I had to sell many of my own listings.  Which is some really hard work, for the same amount of money.

I don't mean to complain.  I mean I am grateful for the few transactions that did close, as I survived.  But I need more than survival.

It's not that I don't want to work hard.  It's just I think everything changed.  Mostly how I felt about you changed.  I think the final straw was in October and I learned my son was going back to Middle East.

As I look back on the time we've been together I remember mostly bad times especially toward the end.  Sorry I can't help it.  But that is just human nature isn't it?  You must admit you have left a bad taste in my mouth.  I am just not sure you and I were meant to be.  I am not going to sugar coat it and pretend it is something it is not. There is really no other way around it.  It's me - it's not you.

But we knew it wasn't going to last when we started this right?  I mean it really is no ones fault it has to end.  Don't be upset, oh and please don't start crying.

What is it?  You ask if there is someone else?

Well, I must be honest.  Yes, there is another year. It's 2009 and yes he does bring me hope.

I have written down my plans for business and personal goals with specifics of how I am going to get there. I am hopeful that this year will be better for me and for my family.

In a way I do I you to thank for 2009.  I don't think I could have gotten here without you.  Much of what I have learned from you I am implementing now.  I've reduced my expenses and implemented higher ROI marketing strategies.

As for the settlement.  I don't think you deserve much.  Maybe a pat on the back for teaching me a few things but I worked for those lessons so I think we are even.  I have acquired a few friendships a long the way and I am taking all my friends I have made this year with me.  I get full custody of them and you are allowed no visitation rights.

As for the rest of it you can have it.  I'm outta here. Don't call me, don't email me, don't send me text messages.  We are done.  It's over.  Time to move on.

Elizabeth this was not meant to be a post which you felt sorry.  This is just life and sometimes it sucks.  You are right though I have to let go of it and comes to terms with it before I can pack it up and move on.  This exactly what has happened.  I had to accept it for what it was and take an assessment of what was left that was worth keeping.  There was alot.  The friendships and connections are absolutely priceless.  The other crap, well it is really crap.  And candy coated crap still tastes like s***.

Nanette,

I think we are all ready to be done with 2008.  Here's hoping for a much improved 2009.  Couldn't be much worse than last year, right?

Nannette my friend- First let me say that I loved the wit in this Post.  Clever and powerful, good combination, and I hear the message.  I had days when I wanted to throw in the towel, days when I was ticked we gave so much money to the banks, yet they wouldn't help us or our clients. Yea, I had many days I couldn't figure it out.

I had days when I just didn't know what to say to my clients anymore because nothing seemed to work unless they gave the house away with a bright red bow.  And that didn't even work because the buyers wanted a Blue bow, or a Yellow one, anything but what we offered, and instead of letting us change the color they just moved on down the road.  Yes, I had those days.

Now to the friends, I am so glad you are taking us with you into this New Year, as I have no intention of being left to the wolves.......sorry but we have a photo shoot scheduled tentatively for March :)  I am very grateful for the connection we are building, and the friendship that is developing.  OK, New Year here we come :)

I think 2008 was a mixed year for a lot of people.  When the going gets tough, the tough sometimes get bitter and nasty about it and I saw a lot of that in 2008 - not something that people in the service industry really should exhibit amongst their piers or their clients.  Good luck in 2009!!

A "Dear John" letter for 2008.  How appropriate!  It didn't turn out quite the way we expected, did it?

I have alot of the same sentiment as you do, but most importantly I want to thank you for having a son who so selflessly gives of his time so that the rest of us can be safe and continue to enjoy our freedoms!

Kathy I thought of you throughout this post.  I thought of all of us that wanted to pull our hair out so many times this year.  But we held it together and was professional about it.  Thanks for coming with me in '09.

June I saw things happen this year that I would have never expected.  I saw many agents act in desparate mannter.  However I can honestly say I did nothing of which I am ashamed of this year.  I told my clients the truth even if it meant I did not get a pay check no matter how badly I needed that deal to close.  That was something that others saw and I gained a lot of respect for that within my industry however, that is not why I did it.  I did it because I have to sleep at night and that is most important.   Best of luck to you in '09.

Margaret Never have felt about a year ending as I have felt about '08.  First "Dear John" letter I ever wrote.  I hope it is my last.

Lisa It is the blessings of friendships and connections that I am most grateful for.  It is these things that are priceless.

Paul I am glad you stopped by.  This is a time of year that is good for reflection.  It seems these times spurs us on.

Caren Thank you for thinking of my son and those others that serve our country.  For without our freedoms this year would have been much harder.

Nanette, Well, as we start this baby year, I hope that we can all get it off on the right foot. Learned a lot from '08. Looking to implement a lot of that knowledge in '09...

Aw don't fret you are young enough to forget 08, ne day it will be as if it never happened. I felt that way about 77, again in 87 and wow again in 07. What was that you ask 97 oh you don't want to know but I was in the prime of my life, 10 ft tall and bullet proof. yea and young enough to forget that history repeats itself.

I came back to read more comments....and offer my shoulder for any more crying that needs to be done :)  The connections and friendships and helping each other over these hurdles are so what is the most important.  By helping each other we help ourselves......I will always have a shoulder you can cry on, or an ear to listen to you vent :)
