How not to sell your home.

If you are a hunter what you don't want to do is show off your trophies.

Sure you are proud of the moose from Alaska.  Sure you are proud of that big buck..  Sure you are proud you got that fox that was raiding that farmers chicken house.  Sure you are proud of bagging that pheasant or duck that caught you off guard and flew to your right.  He was a beauty in your mind.

To most women it is "oh that poor duck or deer"  "Men do the dumbest things to an animal that wasn't doing anything"  "That poor animal didn't have a chance".  You have just killed your house sale.  You have turned off 90% of the women buyers.  You might as well have a bloody picture of the kill day next to it.

You may think I am crazy.  But I take too many Metro Detroit Home buyers out.  I have seen buyers run out of the house.  I had another one today.  It throws them off.  We saw pheasants in a glass case.  And ducks on a shelf.  NO SALE

This lady is going to buy a Metro Detroit home this week.  She is a Michigan relocation buyer.  They are moving here and they need a home by a certain date.  She is not buying that house.  Michigan still has a large hunting population but some states don't.  This lady was from NYC.  So think about who you want to appeal to.

So if you are a hunter put your trophies away.  Box them up out of site.  Put your guns aways.  Put all those stuffed animals away.  Because the trophy now is to sell your home.  Don't let them get away because you scared them.

Hey Russ,

I had a client who had a fear of animals (ALL).  We were in a home with no signs of dead animals anywhere until I opened the door to the man's room.  My client - a very large (professional football player) almost killed me trying to get out of the room.  That was not the end nor the worst of it.  We went up stairs to see the bedrooms.  What we couldn't see on our way up the stairs was a large elk mounted over the stair way.  We only saw it as we got to the top of the stairs.  My buyer was not petrified.  He could not bring himself to go down the stairs because the elk was now right there.  So, I held his hand (did I tell you that I'm a guy) - he closed his eyes, and I lead him down the step...out the front door, and out of town.

Not my worst showing ever though

Russ, I showed a house 2 years ago that had many stuffed dead animals throughout the house. When my buyers little boy saw the dead stuffed squirrel in the bathroom he started crying. That ended that tour.

Russ- I never quite thought of this, but you're right! I'm sure many buyers could potentially be offended by someone's trophies. Thanks for pointing this out.

Russ ~ This is so true!  As a professional home stager I always advise my clients to remove all "heads" on the walls .... it's just too offensive to many potential buyers and as you pointed out, may kill the deal.

Many of us aren't from hunting families, and I agree for those that are not, it could be a major turn off.

Russ, I love this...women would definitely be turned off by the big moosehead hanging on the den wall. ;-)
