1/13/2009 - DAVIS-MONTHAN AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. -- During a ribbon cutting ceremony here Tuesday, D-M Airmen celebrated the grand opening of 64 new junior enlisted homes designed to improve the quality-of- life of D-M Airmen and their families.

The new homes, which are being built, developed, and renovated by the Soaring Heights Communities, will provide Airmen and their families with state-of-the art, three and four-bedroom homes that are 20 to 40 percent larger than existing homes in the D-M community. A total of 573 new homes will be constructed, while 159 existing homes will be renovated.

Tech. Sgt. Theron Lord and his wife Melissa, who were one of the first families to walk through their new energy-efficient home, said the houses are much better than he and his wife had imagined and couldn't wait to move in.

"These homes are some of the best I've seen and my wife and I are excited about moving into our new home," said Sergeant Lord.

All Soaring Heights Communities homes are designed to meet Energy Star standards, resulting in 20 to 30 percent greater energy efficiency than a standard home. All new homes have Energy Star appliances and programmable thermostats.

In addition to building and renovating homes for D-M Airmen, the Soaring Heights Communities construction projects will focus on building the foundation and environment that support strong communities. The neighborhoods will include pedestrian friendly streets, spacious community centers, sports fields, play grounds and other amenities focused on easing the lives of military families.

Soaring Heights Communities is a 50-year partnership created between the Department of the Air Force and Actus Lend Lease through the Military Housing Privatization Initiative (MHPI). Soaring Heights Communities is comprised of two Air Force Bases, Davis-Monthan AFB and Holloman AFB.

In July 2006 the U.S. Air Force selected Actus Lend Lease as its partner to develop, build, renovate, finance and maintain 1,838 homes with 929 homes being built at D-M and 909 at Holloman AFB, N.M.

Approximately 30 families will move into their new homes each month. Soaring Heights Community broke ground on the 573 homes at Davis-Monthan in 2007; all new homes are scheduled to be completed by 2010.
