Lake Washington's Eerie Depths

By

Like most lakes, Lake Washington in Seattle has it's share of mysteries. Located in the center of this great lake is Mercer Island, and crossing it are three floating bridges, but what is interesting is not above the surface, but below in it's murky depths.

This is an image of one of the several Corsairs that have sunk into the lake. You will find some of them on display at the museum of flight in Seattle. There are many other objects in the lake, beyond the wrecks of planes, boats, and the more recent bridges.

There are forests below the surface, some of which are perfectly preserved. There is a belief that at one time Lake Washington was not a lake at all, but part of Puget Sound.

Beyond the many interesting facts of Lake Washington, known to the Indians as Ha'cuy'lake, are the legends. Many Indians -the Lake People, called this place home hundreds and thousands of years ago. Legend has it that a great sea monster would devour what is now known as Mercer Island every night only to spit it out every morning. There are stories of trolls, and spirits, and a more recent tale of a man who drown in the lake with an elk he tried to catch, they both surfaced later on that year.

I am providing a link to a site with more pictures and more information on Lake Washington, which I am sure you will not look at the same next time you see her.

A Seebee recovered fro the lake at a depth of 73 feet.
