5 Things Harry Potter has taught me about Real Estate

5 things Harry Potter has taught me about Real Estate:

1) Being in the Weasley family is way cool.

There is nothing like being a part of a family.  As an agent I didn’t like thinking in these terms - I wanted to be a lone wolf.  But, as an office leader I can tell you without a doubt there is nothing more valuable to an agent's success than being a part of an office culture and a team that is focused on success.  And, just like the Weasleys, it’s nice to have someone always having your back!

2) Stay away from people who look like snakes, because they might bite - but if you can speak to snakes, it might help.

Unlike Lord Voldemort, the evil real estate agent does not have a face that looks like a snake, so it might be more difficult to stay away from those of our kind who do things the way they shouldn’t. BUT, in a market like today’s we must do business anywhere we can.  Therefore, being vigilant is vital.  If you have a sense that the other side is doing business in a way that makes you uncomfortable, communicate it.  Communicate to your boss, to their boss, and to anyone who will listen.  This is the best way to serve your client and their needs.

3) The forbidden forest is a bad place, so don’t go there.

Yup.  It is.  So if you value everything you hold dear, stay away from anything that you think sounds sketchy or too good to be true, because guess what - it is.  In the last 12 months I have seen more potential fraud than I can believe, and it makes me sick.  The only thing we can do is to stay educated on what is right, and to stay away from what is wrong.  That, in the end, will keep us safe.

4) Dementors are scary and depressing, so make sure your patronus is really strong.

There is nothing more frustrating than those who carry around the dark cloud of death and infect the rest of us with it.  I’m serious.  In my office, I have worked very hard at eliminating those who are doom and gloom.  Not here, I say.  I encourage you to have the same outlook.  Do not accept other people’s lack of medication as a reason for not having a great year.  PROTECT YOURSELF.  You make it happen, not them, so stop listening to their garbage.

5) The Daily Prophet lies and lies some more.  Don’t believe everything you read.

Seriously, is there anything worse than having to answer questions from a client who heard something on CNN about how horrible the real estate market is in Bakersfield, CA, when you work in Washington, DC?  NO, there isn’t.  It drives me nuts.  So, how do you defeat these naysayers?  Easy.  With facts!  Kill 'em with numbers, and you will never be subject to the horrors of Cable-land again.

Great analogy!!  Wonderful post...I agree wholeheartedly that we need to educate our clients to the best of our ability and that real estate is very local...we can learn from the trends in other parts of the country, but the facts and figures we need to focus on are today's figures and the facts for our local neighborhood/area.  Thanks for taking an interesting spin and providing some fun reading at the same time!  Have a great 2009....

Great article. I am a big fan of Harry Potter ever since my youngest daughter got caught up with the books and I just HAD to read them to figure out what she was saying. Same thing goes in Real Estate. I listen to what 'the big dogs' say and then I try to research it myself.

As for the 'doom and gloom', yes, our glorious media really likes to have us all believe that everything is going south at a rapid rate. Funny how they never seem to mention the successes.

Loved both the article and the 'art work'. Between Harry Potter and Darth Vader, your article certainly got my attention right off.

Though I haven't seen Harry Potter either (my kids are all grown and my grandson is only 2) you make some very valid observations.

Keep them coming.

Interesting post and a funny correlation to The Harry Potter series.  The part about family was great and working with the right people.  I especially like the photo of Darth Vadar reading the Harry Potter book.  Maybe Star Wars is the next installment....

Well done. Good comparisons and all true espechally the Dementor analogy. I'm a firm believer that we can suck the life right out of our business, homes and offices with black attitudes. Also, when someone reports on the "national real estate market" I just smile and thank goodness that God looks out for fools and little children. Good luck with your office.

Darrin,

Great job!  Your title made me save this for days till I had time to read it.  The content made it worth saving.  I agree that it is essential to rid our lives of negative influences.  Sadly, this sometimes includes co-workers.

Darrin - Oh so true. I like the previous comment saved your post for days in my e-mail until I had time to read it. I'm glad I did. I wholeheartedly agree with all points you made. In my office there are a pair that we refer to as Mr. Doom & Mr. Gloom, everyone else works hard to keep a positive attitude.

Darrin...  Great analogies and advice.  And to those who haven't read Harry Potter for whatever reason, you don't know what you're missing.  I'm old enough to have grandchildren.  In fact, I do have some.  But I grabbeed every HP book as soon as they came out.  They're great, relaxing entertainment.  So get your summer reading ready right now.  get to your favorite book store, or Amazon and stock up on Happy Potter!

My assistant has read all the Harry Potter books, so when she saw your post come through she had to read it.  She says you hit the nail on the head for all the comparisons.  Thanks for an entertaining post.
