BEFORE READING THE BELOW....Note that this is a 'history story' or sorts as this Convelescent Home has closed.  I will not take this story down because it will always leave a lasting impression as one of the most picturesque places on the North Shore of Oahu.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2009-------
Many a time we drove around our island and passed this property and I was one to concoct all kinds of morbid thoughts and tales in my head when I saw a spooky kind of structure. This was one of them. After researching I found that there is nothing spooky about it but a worn down building on the property.
Right off Kamehameha Highway the old gutted building (to the right) still stands with what is left of the state home for wayward boys. On June 18, 2002 a fire destroyed all but concrete walls of the structure that was vacant for some time, so no one got hurt or injured.
North Shore HawaiiWhat this property really is ...is Crawford's Convalescent (nursing) Home, located on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. It has been in existence since 1954 and licensed with 55 beds and serving the Medicare population as well as Intermediate care patients.
James Crawford worked at the State Hospital and decided to take over this site in 1954 and open a nursing home and he started out with just a couple of residents. The current owners built additional structures in 1968 and have since been certified, monitored & licensed through the State and Federal governments. They take the residents on outings as well; such as a recent venture to Waimea Falls Autobon Center.
North Shore Hawaii
Now that I know more about this property I can get those notions out of my head...from way back in "kid time".
Sally maybe you can sell it to a developer.  Maybe I will get to see it this spring when I come to Hawaii.  My wife just won a trip with her company.
Larry: Huh? I think this place has a nice setting for the residents.
Pat: No kidding...right across the highway and a few steps down. :)
Jeff: Thanks! I don't want to jinx it so I'll tell all when it closes! :)
George: No kidding....come to think of it...I'm still like that LOL! Okay...it is :)
Woo Hoo, Hooked you up... How cool is that? Was this building bombed out back in the war? It conjures up that sort of image in my mind. It looks like it has been roofless for at least the 67 years that have passed.
What a great setting to do anything in, including convalescing!  You know Sally...we boomers are hitting retirement age in droves...it might be a good spot for a company looking for a care facility...
That's where I want to go Sally.  BTW, I live in the Town of Crawford in NY.  There are a lot of Crawfords up in this area, wonder if one of them escaped to paradise all those years ago?
It's February in Maine; we are up to our eyeballs in snow this year and I woke up to a big fat zero on the thermometer - - I may be ready for Crawford's myself!  Sure is nice to see the lush landscape in your pics.
Margaret: The air, sun and sea are the top contibutors ....for healing....believe me.
Paddy: I wouldn't doubt it....it is an escape :) A long time ago Elvis lived atop the mountain of Pupukea in his Hawaii Estate. His last visit to the North Shore and his home was in 1977...five months before his death. I presume it was his paradise escape...away from it all.
