Cleaning my house is usually the last thing I want to do on a given day, but I still do it.
Years ago, in the early stages of my marriage, while discussing hobbies my husband exclaimed, "cleaning is your hobby!" - no, it's not. I clean the house because it needs it. I clean because I don't like to live in filth. And, while my house wouldn't pass the white glove test every day, it's pretty clean most of the time. But here's the thing....I don't have my house on the market for sale.
One of the first things I tell clients who have just listed their home is to clean, clean, clean! Make it sparkle and shine. Do a really deep clean. Start at the top of each room (e.g. clean the cobwebs off of the ceilings, light fixtures, etc.) and work your way down. Vaccum, dust and straighten like you've never done before. It's not fun - I know. But when a buyer comes to look at your home and all they can focus on is how dirty and cluttered it is you've probably just lost that potential buyer. I've been on several showings where I know that the seller had ample time to prepare for the showing and it looks like they ran out of the house 5 minutes before we arrived. Dirty dishes in the sink, clothes strewn about the rooms, and clutter everywhere. Guess what, that home usually sticks out in my buyers mind for the wrong reasons.
As you're doing your deep cleaning (moving furniture, cleaning baseboards, vacuuming vents, etc.) de-clutter as well. Try to make each room look as clean and clutter free as possible. Take personal effects down and make rooms and neutral and tasteful as possible. Then, have a friend or family member who can be brutally honest come over and give it a good inspection.
Unless cleaning is your hobby (and my husband now knows what my real hobbies are) this will be a pretty unpleasant chore. But it will certainly make your home more show-ready and memorable to potential buyers for all of the right reasons.
