I love peanut butter, but rat's in the vat, and salmonella poisoning...can you trust anyone?

WHERE IS THE FDA?

You can be assured if one of their family members would have been affected by this poisoning, things would be handled differently.

Where is the Quality Control?  For that matter, who is responsible for the quality control?

How discusting were the pictures of the dead rats (not mice, rats) that were shown on FOX news tonight on the Geraldo.

I do not thing that most people realize how many foods contain peanuts, peanut butter, etc.

Even dog food. Chewy bars, cookies, PLEASE NAME ALL YOU KNOW!

How do you feel about yet another debacle...now this involves food!

Why not eat organic peanut butter? Why not buy locally grown and produced food?

Shane,

I do eat organic. I love the local "farm fresh" food.  When I can I get the fresh peanuts and peanut butter.  The point I'm making is for the people who don't have that luxury or don't know it's even available. The other point I was making is that peanuts are in lots of foods we eat and some people don't even know it.

The third point I was trying to make is that the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) should have stricter guidelines.  There should never be an incident where a rat fell in a vat and they couldn't get it out...no matter who is eating the peanut butter later.

This whole thing just repulses me that these situations exist.

Karen, it is shocking the lack of quality control in this one plant.  I understand your frustration and anger!

Yes this is a shocking reality. We try and be safe and then we go to outlets we trust only to find that we are buying foods that can kill us. What do you do?????

Hi Karen - What is this world coming to?  Tainted peanut butter is not something I thought we would ever see.  As a kid it was a staple and I still like it as an adult.  We certainly do put our trust in the foods we buy in our groceries and expect them to be safe.

Sad...isn't it.  We shouldn't need the FDA for this.  Self-policing should be more than adequate.  Too bad the makers don't have the right moral conscience.

Laura,

I cannot believe it either.  I also couldn't believe all the foods containing peanut butter!

Jon,

I love peanuts and peanut butter. I still like a fluffer-nutter...you know the marshmallow and peanut butter sandwich...with a dill pickle...LOLOL..I'll bet you never had that combo!

Larry,

I'll bet those that saw the rat fall into the peanut butter vat don't eat peanut butter!

Tony & Darcy,

When I lived in PA, I would go to the local "nut" - no pun intended - shop and get the fresh ground. We had to keep it in the fridge, but there was nothing like fresh peanut butter.

They also had fresh Macadamia nut butter...OMGosh, that was so good!

Karen - Great post and you really wonder about all the foods on the market that slip there way through. I have taken a break on the peanut butter and what is (Elvis) going to do without all that peanut butter to eat. Next time someone sites him they might not even recognize The King!

We have two family members who are severly allergic to peanuts (as in life-or-death allergic) so we're painfully aware of how many foods contain some derivative of peanuts.  It really IS amazing.  I missed the show you referenced, but it does sound disgusting.  I've never eaten at a specific McDonalds near us since I saw rats crawling on the bread being stacked at the door in passage from a delivery truck.

Karen,

This is simply crazy.......they knew and sent the product out anyway......yesterday the owner was in front of a Congressional hearing and took the 5th.....and was allowed to walk out.
