When Not Buying = Buyer's Remorse

By
Real Estate Agent with The Realty Group, LLC

At Lowe's, they had fence panels for sale at 50% off.

I need to build a fence.

I really, really thought about those fence panels - a lot.

I thought I'd just wait a little longer though, maybe when the weather got just a little bit warmer.

So, it's turned warmer.

Yesterday, I went to Lowe's to finally buy the fence panels that I wanted.

They were gone.

They were such a bargin, the Lowe's guy told me, people just snapped them up.

Now I'm kicking myself.  Hard and frequently.

Will today's home buyers who are sitting on the fence kick themselves later?

I wonder.

Alyce, this is such a great parallel for fence sitting, and the resulting consequences. Don't wait. Get those fence panels TODAY!!

How ironic, huh?  Nope, they're all sold out and I BLEW it.  Arrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhh.  Now if I can just convey this message to my buyers...

Thanks for stopping by Gary.  Hope you had a neat Valentine's Day.

The nice part is there are a lot of homes out there.  A couple we have been working with for 5 months let 3 homes slip by because they had to think about it, etc.  Finally we have a closing date because it dawned on them if they thought toooooooooo long they would lose.

I really like your analogy Alyce.  Real Bargains don't last long. As a matter of fact I was looking at some fence panels myself Saturday at our Lowes, to put around a garden. They weren't practical for keeping out rabbits, but sure looked nice.

Ron - Sometimes losing a home spurs buyers on to find another, other times, they get stuck on the one that got away...who knows??

Congratulations on your upcoming closing and thanks for your comment.

Trey -  Sounds like you're getting spring fever - I hear you.  Get some coyotes for those rabbits (heh, heh).  I appreciate your comments.

Alyce,

We just discussed fence sitters at our last sales meeting.  I think many buyers will be like yourself and regret not buying some of the deals out there right NOW!  Thanks for sharing.

It is amazing to see people wait until the prices go up!!  It is so hard to express to people that rich people buy when no one else is buying!!

I remember when people were crawling over each other to make offers - it's like it was a gold rush or something.  Now the ball is in their court and they're waiting.  Of course the economy has a lot to do with it - but a big percentage of our jobs are with the government and when has a bureaucrat ever been laid off? (lol)... Thanks for your comment!

I have had more than one buyer lose a house by trying to lowball even something priced at current fair market value and be seriously upset with themselves later.

Brenda - Yes, I worked with some clients who consistently low balled - I finally figured out that they were more interested in looking at houses and negotiating than actually buying one.

But I really did need those fence panels!! Shame on me.  Lesson learned.

Hello Kimo - During these confusing times, I find myself editing rooms more than adding to them - I need the clarity that only a blank wall can provide.  Thank you for your comment.  It's good to hear from you.

Very funny story!  I have a friend who was waiting to buy a home, but he kept saying he wanted to see what happened with interest rates.  When the rates went down he said he was waiting to find that right house.  He found the right house, but he did not want to write an offer because he was convinced the rates were going to get lower.  While he was waiting the house he really wanted got sold.  He is still waiting, but every time I see him he tells me how much he regrets not writing on offer on his dream home.  Buyer's remorse for not buying!

Hi Christopher - and then they start comparing everything they see to the one "that got away." People are kinda funny, huh?  Nice to hear from someone from the'hood.

Dear Alyce,

Very nice post and good analogy.

Some people have to lose several "deals", before they can recognize an opportunity!

Hello Barbara - Very kind of you to comment.  Thank you for stopping by!  I have clients who still drive by a house they should have bought.  They say it's "their house" (dot, dot, dot...)  Kinda sad really.
