Dear Diary, My Passion Is Expressed On My Bookshelves

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Destiny Real Estate Cambridge, MA

I've always loved to scan people's bookshelves to learn more about them.  Our interests and enthusiams are revealed in the books on our shelves.   My overloaded shelves are no exception.  My passions are varied, my list of enthusiasms long, I've got hobbies and interests galore.  The phases of my life can be traced in my book collection.

There's no doubt, though, if you scan through the books that I'm a bit obsessed.

I love the idea of HOME.Books About Home I love architecture. Books About Architecture

I love houses in their infinite variety.  Books on House Styles From Cottages   Books about cottages

To Colonials.   Books About Colonials     Bungalows    Books About BungalowsTo Victorians.    Books About Victorians

I love Old Houses  Old house book   Newer Houses   Books on Modern House Styles

I love every room in my house.  Books about Houses

I love New England where I live. Books About New England

I love my family.   Books About Family  And my cat - who's family too.  Books About Cats

I love Books of all kinds.  Books About Books

For Questions.  Book of Questions   For Answers.  Book of Answers

For Fun and Games.  Books About Fun and Games

And the truth is, as Thomas Jefferson said, I cannot live without books

My collection is mostly music and travel.

My mom and I have always been book collectors. I think we might be competing with each other, but she can't win. I've worked at Borders Books & Music for 30 years, so I'll always have at least one more than she does.

Liz, I love your bookshelves - - I was going to comment that you are too organized with all the books grouped by subject matter on your shelves - - but I see from a previous comment that it was all STAGED!  How fun was it to put this one together.  I read tons of stuff - I AM going to break down and get the Kindle2 - I love everything about books, the smell of old ones, the feel of the pages in my hands, the expression of person they represent, etc.,  but when you read alot of hardcover - - the weight of it just gets to be a pain.

Elizabeth, I had never thought of my books as my personna but you're right. I stood in front of my shelf and pondered just where my interests had been and I can tell by my newer purchases that it's headed a different direction, very intriquing post. Thank you.

Deb

Liz,

I just found this group and am so happy!  Read my first chapter book, given by my grandmother, in 1st grade and haven't stopped since!  Primarily I'm a fiction reader, but love all genres.  I look forward to checking here in the group for ideas on what to read next!  Thanks!

Hi Jeff - and photography is not my strong suit - ha!  I use IrfanView to crop, etc. - it's fairly simple and free.

Thanks Alexsandra!  Ever since I was a kid babysitting in the neighborhood I've checked out people's bookcases to learn more about them.  And it always weirds me out to find *no* books!

Hi Jim - I had read of your tenure at Borders in one of your posts - I would have been like a kid in a candy store - how did your paycheck make it home intact?

Too funny Terry!  Staged only for consistency!  I remember the first time a highly organized friend suggested organizing my books by subject - it was a newsflash! I did start grouping them but in my new house the collection has overrun the shelf space so disorder reigns. Built-in bookcases are on my list but it's an old house and the list is long.

Hi Deb - I really started thinking about it when I was into more self-help books on all sorts of topics. You could really tell a *lot* about me then - maybe too much!

Thanks Leander.  And I do hope it is the best year for all of us!

Hi Amy ~ I think introducing kids to reading is the most important gift you can give them - it changes your world.  Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Gabrielle - Thanks so much!  It was fun - but messy - the cat was tripping over the piles.

Thanks Dawn. My family will get a big chuckle from the thought of me inspiring someone to get organized. Too funny!  Though I guess my books are a lot more organized than my desk when I think about it.

Hi Elizabeth, You truly do have a diverse collection of books. Books are nutrition for our soles.  They make us grow and take us to far away lands.  I love books.

Elizabeth,

You must have very tall bookshelves to keep all your books!  :-)

I enjoyed reading this post and especially the clever layout with the photos of the books.   Great diary and book report!

Elizabeth, I love your creativity in writing this post! Plus I love your books! I don't have much time to read books anymore. The internet is too invasive I admit. But I would have to say I still have a passion for reading and learning!

Hi Janice ~ Me too! This is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of my books.

Hi Sandy ~ I think anybody who loves books will never be bored.

Hi Gerry - I do! And I always have a bit of a worry that the floors will fall through! Ha! Books are heavy.

Thanks Frank and Sharon! It's true - there are so many things that fill up our days now - and the internet is a big one.  Not enough hours in the day...

Hi Elizabeth, I just broke down and bought the Kindle2 a few weeks ago and cannot tell you how much I love it.  I was hesitant at first because I so love books, looking at covers in the book store, organizing my bookcase, etc.  With the Kindle2 though I am trying new books, reading more and able to travel lighter.  Now if I can just stop reading and start blogging more!

Liz - Thanks for sharing your library with us.  As a fellow booklover I always look in peoples's bookshelves to get a better sense of who they are.  Very creative idea for a post.

Hi Amy ~ Thanks for sharing that.  Maybe there's a place for both - that's the impression I'm getting. I just know the profit margins in publishing are so thin - I initially saw it as a threat to books in print.  Maybe it can boost publishers' profits.  I hope so! Really interesting to hear from your perspective as a lover of books that you enjoy the Kindle so much.

Hi Pam ~ Thanks!  I've been scoping out people's books since I babysat as a kid.  It's irresistible.
