The New "Old-Fashioned Way"?

By
Real Estate Agent

Ok, I'll admit it...I was dragged kicking and screaming into the world wide web 10 years ago. But I still called 411 to get phone numbers and looked up addresses in that big, white, now-almost-obsolete book that sits in the living room, under the telephone. Yes, I also still have a phone that PLUGS IN to the wall. Imagine that!!

So I had to chuckle this morning when I asked my husband, "What are your plans for today?"

Hubby: "I'm going to plot a route to some estate and moving sales." His hobby is "sale-ing".

Me: "Would you like to borrow my GPS? I'm showing houses, but I won't need it today."

"No thanks, I'll do it the old-fashioned way."

"Mapquest, right?"

 "Yep!"  : )

Cute!  I have to laugh - my husband was on the phone last week with a staff member for someone with whom he was making an appointment in another city.  He asked where they were and the kids gave him the address;  my husband, slightly exasperated, said "I know your address.  What are you near?" meaning what landmarks, etc.  You know, the way we USED to do it!  LOL

The kid said, "just put it in your GPS. I don't know how to get here."  My husband just laughed and replied, "Son, I'm smart enough to read a map, I don't need GPS.  Just thought a local landmark around your building would be helpful, but don't worry, I can figure it out."

It's sort of like first graders using calculators!  I rely on my GPS and my map reading skills have really deteriorated.  LOL  There is something to be said for the "old fashioned way."

Hi Susan!

I fought the GPS-thing, too, until my husband got a free one at work and gave it to me last summer. It's just so convenient!!

But I just found it so interesting that the "old-fashioned way" for my husband was Mapquest.com!  : )

That's hilarious!!! I got my first GPS last week and am already pretty fond of it. I've always hated Mapquest, so this is one piece of new-fangled technology I'll embrace!

I still like to use maps, especially to see the "big" picture of a region without having to put on my reading glasses...

I would do just what your husband does.   I like seeing it on paper when I am driving from one location to another.

Call me old fashon.

Jennifer ~ I didn't know you'd gotten one! But yeah, isn't it great! My daughter downloaded a different voice for hers - he's British. I might try that!

Kathryn ~ That's exactly what I did yesterday. Not so much because of the vision (I can't see far away, upclose is ok), but to see what was around the area and to get a better idea of where I was going after point A.

Tim ~ Ok, you're old fashioned.  ; )

Sue,

Too cute.  Your husband is one of a kind.  One that needs directions!

Hi Brenda ~ It's funny, because he's cool with getting directions BEFORE HE LEAVES THE HOUSE. But to stop and ASK??? In 8 years, I have never seen it happen. lol
