San Diego Celebrates Japanese Tradition of Hanami

San Diego Japanese Friendship Gardens

Balboa Park has a wonderful newly expanded Japanese Friendship Gardens and it has more than 150 Japanese Cherry Trees making it one of the largest collections in Southern California.

This past weekend San Diego Celebrated the Japanese Cherry Festival in Balboa Park. In Japan this Spring Ritual is  called Hanami. I tried to get there to share some wonderful photos of the event and the Cherry blossoms but alas business has to come first. I hope to get there this weekend while the trees are still in bloom and I will share with you the photos of the newly expanded gardens and the flowering Cherry Trees.

The largest Cherry Blossom Festival in the US is celebrated in Washington DC and it might be another week or so before all their Cherry Trees are in full bloom. If you love these Cherry Tree Blossoms as much as I do, go over to Patricia Kennedy's Blog and watch for when she puts all her Cherry Blossom Festival photos in DC on here blog. They are magnificent and not to be missed.

A couple of weeks ago Jim and I both decided to "play hookey" and hang out at the San Diego Zoo.  I had my little camera and took several photos.  Here are 3 of my favorites:

And my favorite, the charming, entertaining gorilla...

San Diego Balboa Park 2015 Centennial Celebration Coming into Focus

EDGE2015

Balboa Park Centennial

In 2015 San Diego's Balboa Park will celebrate 100 years since the Panama California Exposition of 1915 that took place on a designated parcel of land that left San Diego with a world class park and an internationally famous Zoo. The planned year long celebration is to be called EDGE2015. With involvement from many other countries with pavilions highlighting their unique culture and this centennial will look something like a hybrid of a Worlds Fair and a Superbowl Experience.

Behind the name of Edge2015 is the year long celebration of the past 100 years and with focus on the illumination of the next 100. Demonstrations and displays will cover the gambit from Art, Lifestyle, and Technology. There will be several pillars of the theme with Innovation being the general theme integrating the arts, science, medicine, energy, urban life, economic as well as social life in our city.

All the ideas and plans are coalescing and as more specific events and exhibitions are announced I will continue to update with all the amazing things that will turn San Diego Balboa Park into another hosting grounds of a year long event extraordinaire.

Kid City in San Diego's Balboa Park
Colleen K. Cotter (Keller Williams)

San Diego is a fun place for children.  The weather coupled with lots of cool attractions is a win-win.  There is always something fun to do.

If you have children aged 5 and under, Kid City at the Air and Space Museum, is a must.  It is in Balboa Park directly across from the large water fountain.  Kid City is an inactive indoor play ground that looks like a mini-city.  There is a grocery store, a computer lab, a fire station and lots of pictures of buildings.  There are also balls that shoot up with compressed air.  I guess that must be common in some cities.

Kids love the freedom of it.  Guardians love the break.  There are areas to sit and relax while the kids wear themselves out.  Kids also enjoy the variety the place offers them.

Unfortunately the Museum doesn't have gates on the two entry/exits.  That would be a plus.  Occasionally a kid makes a run for another exhibit.  Trust me.  I have suggested it many times.  The pleasant yet tired Docents are not that interested.  Perhaps there are no gates so that the Guardians stay engaged.

After you and the kids are worn out, stop by the little cafe downstairs on your way out.  Pick up something to eat.  Use the picnic tables outside and enjoy the weather, the fountain and the people watching.

The Grinch is Wintering in San Diego
Colleen K. Cotter (Keller Williams)

The Grinch is a holiday tradition in many American homes.  I remember running to the basement with my brother at 7pm for the special showing every holiday season.  In those days we didn't have video on demand.  You saw it when it was playing or you lost out.

In San Diego we have a tradition of presenting The Grinch play at Balboa Theater.  It is a blast for kids and their drivers.

grinch

Today the Grinch took a break and visited the New Children's Museum which as many of you know is my backyard.  It is directly across the street from Horizons.  My boys were not thrilled to have the green hombre in the hood.  They have been asking me all day if the Grinch is still at the Museum and if he is going to surprise them at their house.  One of my sons asked the Grinch if he was the Big Bad Wolf.

As far as traditions go, seeing The Grinch at Balboa Theater is something that will live on in my family.  My boys will come to welcome his tale of stealing Christmas and growing his heart. The Whos in Whoville are also welcome to winter in San Diego.

December Nights 2012 Dec 7th

December Nights
December 7th and 8th at Balboa Park

Christmas in San Diego is very special time of year. We don't have snow to build a snowman like those  that live back East and  our temperatures are not freezing cold so we put on an extravaganza like no other in the entire country.

Christmas Nights, In our traditional San Diego style, kicks off the holiday season December 7th and 8th. I am always impressed how our city can pull all the parts together and put on an event like this. This is our 35th year and like years before, this years event will hold to our tradition of free admission for all, even in these uncertain economic times.

Christmas is a time of giving and the city of San Diego does it best!
I have attended this event every year for as long as I can remember and it just gets better and better. Taking place in one of my favorite all time favorite places, Balboa Park, we are able to easily hold the over 300,000 people over the two days and nights which doesn't even begin to fill the park. We could hold another hundred thousand more over the several dyas and nights and each years this event grows bigger and bigger.

The festivities are all through the park but the main entertainment takes place at the Spreckles Organ Pavilion with the massive seating and incredible sound system for it's organ recitals, provided every Sunday afternoon, year around.

One of things I personally love is the remote off-site parking sites all around San Diego, the marvelous and wonderful shuttle transportation system to get you there and again free of charge. There just is nothing like this event anywhere.

The entertainment is incredible with the annual Christmas Tree Story centered around a huge Christmas Tree that opens up with real people representing the story of Christ. The participating vocal groups and Children's groups make for a special evening filled with the traditional Spirit of Christmas. BTW, This event is everyone no matter your beliefs or religious preference. It is about love, giving and sharing and as far as I can discern, every religion shares that spirit.

The Many International Houses provide the food selections from around the globe at the International Christmas Festival at the House of Pacific Relations Cottages and each has their own native country's best prepared dishes. From fast foods to full course dinners, all is available throughout the International area. The most difficult part for me of the many foods available is which one to choose.

In addition, the many different  museums are open free to the public from 5:00-9:00pm both nights and feature a wide variety of exhibitions and entertainment-from the Timken Museum's annual Christmas Tree displaying the exquisite Schlappi Collection of Hord and Schlappi Christmas ornaments-to the Reuben H. Fleet's kid-friendly and interactive Kid City-to the San Diego Natural History Museum's Fossil Mysteries set to holiday music in the atrium. For the little train engineers and thier Dads, the San Diego Model Train Museum is a must see. This is one of my personal favorites having grow up with a Dad that loved his trains and sharing his many displays with Children groups throughout the county that we lived. My Dad sparkled at Christmas and I inherited his special joy of the holiday.

Come on down to Balboa Park ,either  Friday December 7th and Saturday December 8th. and enjoy a spectacle of Christmas Lights and decorations and entertainment that is unparalleled and enjoy San Diego's gift to it's citizens and our visitors alike.

I'll see you there!
