Gardening in a thirsty state: trees on Jackson Street, San Francisco
Lottie Kendall, Helping make YOUR dreams a reality (Today | Sotheby's International Realty)

Gardening in a thirsty state like California creates unique challenges, but also encourages and allows for some beautiful results.

Take, for instance, the street trees along this block of Jackson Street in the Pacific Heights area of San Francisco. I believe they are a type of Arbutus, and take very little watering. Birds are attracted to the fruit and clusters of small greenish white flowers that appear in fall and winter.

One of the unique beauties of the trees, like their cousins the California native madrone trees, is the beauty of the bark.

Lush green lawns and weeping willow trees have their own beauty, but it's not a beauty suited to our Mediterranean climes. Luckily, there are equally beautiful plants for us to enjoy here, while saving our dwindling water supply.

Living the San Francisco Dream - Issue #3
Lottie Kendall, Helping make YOUR dreams a reality (Today | Sotheby's International Realty)

Today’s issue of Living the San Francisco Dream focuses on the Pacific Heights area of the city. On days like today—warm, sunny and picture-perfect—Pacific Heights draws one like a magnet.

This is the type of day when a picnic lunch at Alta Plaza or a chat with a friend in Lafayette Park is almost irresistible. The calendar might say “February” but spring is definitely in the air.

This neighborhood in the northern part of the city is known for fabulous views, grand mansions, and two recently refurbished and renovated knoll-top parks.

The shopping areas of Fillmore, Union and Sacramento streets are nearby, as is the Presidio, now part of national park system

Showcasing a view from a San Francisco home
Lottie Kendall, Helping make YOUR dreams a reality (Today | Sotheby's International Realty)

When I list a house for sale, helping to capture the feeling of the home is kept top of mind when I write ad copy, write blog posts about the property, when meeting with my professional photographers, and when I take pictures of my own.

My Samsung Galaxy SIII has a panorama feature which I've been playing with. Not only does it help me take better shots of interior rooms but it's excellent at capturing views. Take a look:

This first picture is a regular shot, cropped some at top & bottom only

view from condo on Jackson

Now take a look at the panorama, again cropped top and bottom only

Panorama from condo on Jackson

Now all of Russian Hill is included, as well as Mt. Tamalpais to the left and Angel Island in the center. While the view in reality is wider than this panorama shot, the panorama feature does a much better job of capturing the feel of the view.

If you're thinking of selling your home, put me to work to showcase the unique attributes of your property.

Pacific Heights Sights: mansions, staircases, views and whimsey

Walking across Pacific Heights is one of the many delightful experiences in San Francisco. Where else, in a short 1.4 miles from Van Ness Avenue to Lyon Street, does one see:

Two beautiful parks, each covering 4 city blocks

Pacific Heights park

Mansions of all descriptions: Victorians, Georgians, half-timbered, modern, classical

Pacific Heights mansions

Foreign consulates: German, Russian, Italian, Norwegian among them

Italian consulate in Pacific Heights

Mesmerizing views of San Francisco bay

View from top of Lyon Street stairs

Streets so steep they twist and turn their way down the hill--

or stop altogether and turn into staircases

Baker Street stairs

and a bit of whimsy to bring a smile to one's face

outdoor art on Broadway

Come find your San Francisco dream, and when you're here, get out and explore. You'll find a new experience on every walk.

A Glimpse of San Francisco-a Victorian House in Pacific Heights
Lottie Kendall, Helping make YOUR dreams a reality (Today | Sotheby's International Realty)

Walking and hiking in San Francisco is a love of mine, and one I enjoy many times a week. Each neighborhood is unique, with its fun, beautiful, surprising characteristics. As I walk about, I often snap pictures of a building, a garden, a park, a view, happy dogs, or whatever strikes my fancy.

I enjoy sharing glimpses of the neighborhoods in San Francisco. This week, as I was jogging across Pacific Heights, the beauty of this Victorian House, tucked between larger condominiums and apartment buildings, made me pause.

Victorian house on Pacific Ave, SF

Its obviously a well-loved and well-cared for home. Located across the street from a small market, close to bus lines and the Union Street and Upper Fillmore neighborhoods, I suspect the owner is one happy camper. Take a closer look at the detail:

Isn't it marvelous?

When you're ready to live your San Francisco dream, whether it's a beautiful old Victorian house or a sleek, modern condominium, give me a call and we'll get started.

Will it Rain in San Francisco Today?
Lottie Kendall, Helping make YOUR dreams a reality (Today | Sotheby's International Realty)

Heart on Lyon Street stairsRain is finally likely in San Francisco. It's not here yet, but we're hopeful.

2013 was one of the driest years on record, and 2014 is starting out in a worrisome fashion. We have had no rain in many weeks. The air quality has been impacted. The water content in our minuscule snow pack in the Sierra Nevadas is low. Reservoirs throughout the state are at low levels, levels like 27% and 40% of normal. Municipalities are beginning to implement water-conserving measures (but that's the topic for another time.)

When wispy clouds started floating across the sky Friday afternoon, and I learned that rain is anticipated on today, I changed my late afternoon plans. I left my computer, laced up my running shoes, put the phone on silent mode, grabbed my car keys, and drove over to Lyon Street at Broadway.

My destination: a run down and up some hills in the Presidio, one of the City's treasures. Rarely do I get the car out when I'm in San Francisco, but today daylight was limited and I didn't have the time to walk the 1.5 miles across Pacific Heights and finish my trail run before dark.

Take a look at my starting and ending point. Beautiful, isn't it?

We're living our San Francisco Dream. Is the time right for you to do the same?
