Historic Homes of Denver: Historic Homes and Buildings - The Norman

The NormanThe stately Norman Apartments are located at 99 S. Downing Street just west of the famed Denver Country Club.  . Built in 1924 the Norman Apartments were designed and built by Denver Architect William Norman Bowman (thus the name "The Norman").

The Norman is one of the most beautiful and best un-touched examples of a luxury apartment building from the 20's & 30's.  The Norman is 6 story's high and was built with a Colonial Revival and Spanish Colonel Revival feel.  She has two wings at right angles to each other.  In total, The Norman was built with 48 individual apartments.  The best of the day was used in The Norman.  First off, all of the apartments have 9 foot ceilings.  Mahogany doors and wood trim can be found throughout.  As you walk into the main foyer of The Norman you are greeted with an elegant yet warm feel.  Marble floors highlight the entryway, and one of the first things that I noticed and fell in love with in The Norman was the old brass elevator.  Today many buildings trim out their elevators with wood in order to give an elegant feel, but the elevator at The Norman is the REAL DEAL.

Today, The Norman has been "condo'd" out, so some of the individual units have been painted, BUT, for the most part, many of the owners have maintained the elegance that The Norman was built with.  Units do not often come available, but there are 1 bedroom/1 bath units as small as 600+ square feet and go up to 2 bedrooms/2 bath units that are over 2,000 square feet.

The Norman was entered into the National Registry of Historic Places in 1983 and today stands as a proud example of what the luxury apartment building of the 1920's and 1930's would strive to be!

The Historic Weckbaugh Mansion is very possibly one of my favorite Historic Homes of Denver.  Certainly it is one of the first homes that made me stop in my very tracks the first time I saw her!  Whenever I drive down Alameda Avenue, I go just a couple of blocks out of my way, for the simple opportunity to drive by the Weckbaugh Mansion and just see this Historic Home in Denver that I love so much.  There is just something about the Historic Weckbaugh Mansion that makes me stand in awe of this incredible architectural beauty!

The Weckbaugh Mansion was designed by well known Denver Architect Jules Jacques Benedict.  The construction of the Mansion was started during the Great Depression in 1930 and initially was intended to be much larger.  Ultimately, the Historic Weckbaugh Mansion ended up with 7 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms.  Public records shows 9,366 square feet on two levels.  The construction of the Weckbaugh Mansion was finished in 1933.  The Weckbaugh Mansion was built by the family of John K. Mullen, a prominent Denver philanthropist and businessman.  The Weckbaugh Mansion was built for Ella Mullen Weckbaugh.  The Historic Weckbaugh Mansion is located on Cedar Avenue on the south side of the Denver Country Club overlooking Cherry Creek.  The Weckbaugh Mansion is a beautiful example of the French Chateau Style and sits proudly on 1.7 acres of landscaped wonder.  

Italian marble was used extensively in the construction of the Weckbaugh Mansion especially throughout the main entry hall and throughout the several fireplaces in the home.  Although several real estate sites list the address as being on East 9th, the Historic Weckbaugh Mansion is actually located at 1701 E. Cedar Ave. and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 #84000826.

Ella Mullen Weckbaugh died in 1977 in her 70's.  The Historic Weckbaugh Mansion has remained privately owned since her death.

The Country Club Neighborhood is a small community of about 550 homes with high quality, high end architectural design and construction.  The landscaped parkways are a defining element of the Country Club Neighborhood, and create a feeling of park-like spaciousness.  The two main features of the Country Club Neighborhood are the Denver Country Club itself, which is located in the southern part of the neighborhood on First Avenue and Speer Blvd, and the Country Club Historic District which was designated as a Landmark District in 1990.  The wide streets, well maintained sidewalks, mature trees, and houses set back from the street give the area a distinguished look.  Located just minutes from the Cherry Creek Shopping District, the Country Club Neighborhood is one of the most beautiful and sought-after neighborhoods in Denver.

The Country Club Neighborhood is predominantly single-family mansions and large homes.  The homes come in a variety of architectural styles including Denver Squares, Spanish Style Mansions, Mediterranean Style Mansions, Bungalows, Victorians, large Tudors and Colonial Mansions.

In 1902, the wealthy owners of the Denver Country Club purchased 120 acres along Cherry Creek for the new site for their Club.  That same day, this group purchased land to the north and incorporated the Fourth Avenue Realty Company to build estate type homes in the area.  The Country Club Neighborhood is divided into four subdivisions - Park Place Club, Country Club Place, Country Club Annex, and Park Lane Square.  Most of the homes were built in the 1910s and 1920s, with many of the houses being showcases for the Denver architects of the period.

The Country Club Neighborhood incorporates some of the finest examples of historic architecture in Denver today.
