Ground Has Broken on the Lauren Condos in Bethesda, MD

There was a pause in the market for this close in Bethesda zip code of 20816 in 2013 with the government shutdown as well as a rise in activity culminating in a drop after the quick rise in interest rates.  Overall, the zip code had a year over year rise in all single family homes as well as homes of all types.

Foodie Friday - Smashburger Opens in Bethesda

There are lots of ways to cook a hamburger.  For instance, some people like their burgers smashed on the grill. So, burger fans, take note! Smashburger opened in Bethesda on Wednesday, Dec. 11.Smashburger Bethesda—located at 4903 Cordell Ave.—will have 63 seats and will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Bethesda is well known in the DC area for its many restaurants, so a new restaurant is a welcome addition to the area's culinary experiences. 

It's Smashburger's second (of 12) locations slated to open in Maryland over the next two years.  Smashburger is a fast-growing,  "better burger" restaurant, offering burgers that are a cut above the usual fast-food variety. Its signature burger patty is made of fresh (not frozen) Angus beef smashed on a 400-degree flat grill "to sear in the juicy flavor." The burgers are then served on toasted "artisan" buns and "topped with a selection of the freshest produce, real cheeses and highest-quality condiments."  Yum!


If you are not a red meat fan, Smashburger also serves Haagen-Dazs shakes, chicken sandwiches, salads, fries and other sides and regional menu items. Items exclusive to the Bethesda location will include a truffle mushroom Swiss cheese sandwich and a spicy Baja sandwich, "packed full of punch with fresh jalapenos, guacamole, pepper jack, lettuce, tomato, onion and chipotle mayo on a spicy chipotle bun."

Also, the Bethesda location will serve items exclusive to DC-area Smashburgers, including the Capital Burger and Capital Chicken Sandwich, with grilled onions, Swiss cheese, arugula, applewood-smoked bacon, tomatoes and mayonnaise on a brioche bun. 

"When looking to further expand in the Greater DC market, Bethesda was a natural choice for our next location," Scott Crane, Smashburger's chief executive officer, said. "It exudes a booming energy from the hundreds of businesses that populate the area and the people that breathe life into the community."

Smashburger opened in 2007 and now has more than 200 corporate and franchise restaurants in 29 states and four other countries.

The Lauren, a new Bethesda Luxury Condo, is being built on Woodmont and Hampden Lanes in downtown Bethesda. Described as "Everything a Discerning Buyer Could Want. And One Thing More. A Bethesda Address." the Lauren promises a rare opportunity to enjoy an uncommonly quiet and peaceful lifestyle, while still in the heart of Bethesda. 

Its website,,  guarantees that the project will be a boutique property with only 29 residences, and an iconic architecture which will only further its cache (sic).  These new Bethesda luxury condos will range in size from 2000 to 6000 feet and will feature direct access elevators, 9 and 10 foot ceilings, vented fireplaces, home automation systems, and roof terraces for some units. 

Lauren, a new Bethesda luxury condoExtra community amenities in this new luxury Bethesda condo include a media/screening room, private wine storage, valet parking in the garage, a fitness center, and a community roof top terrace.  There are additional guest suites available for purchase with selected condos.  These are 565 to 695 square foot units with bath and kitchen.  The developers envision that these can be used as  guest suites, home offices, home gyms, or anything else you can imagine.  Of course, all of this luxury comes at a price. The website politely announces that the units start in the several millions.  This will work out to an asking price of $1500 per square foot for some of the condominiums.  To put that figure into context, resale prices at the Lionsgate and the Adagio, two five year old upscale condo buildings in Bethesda, are running nearer to $575 a square foot. 

This growth in Betheda's new luxury condo market is a trend which is aimed at the new market of empty nesters who want to trade their large suburban homes for low-maintenance condos within walking distance of the shops, restaurants, and public transportation of downtown Bethesda. Developers also are hoping to catch the eye of young professionals who can afford high end housing but want to stay in an urban area rather than buying a single family home in the suburbs. At least two units have been reserved so far.

The services promised by the 24/7 front desk concierge makes my heart skip a beat- dog walking services, housekeeping, plant maintenance, flower deliveries, grocery shopping, car detailing, event tickets, minor home repairs, gift shopping, and prescription pickup! On the ground floor of the building will be 8600 square feet of retail space, including a signature restaurant. 

This will certainly be luxury condo living in Bethesda! For example, on the penthouse 9th floor level there are 6 condos ranging in size from a 3 bedroom, 3.5 bath condo with nearly 3000 square feet of space and a balcony. The smallest condo on the penthouse level is a 2 bedroom, 2 bath unit at 1570 square feet. Some units offer gas fireplaces, while others will have large terraces. The kitchens will be outfitted with Bosch and Thermador appliances, wine coolers, built in espresso machines, and warming drawers. Bathrooms will have natural stone floors, frameless shower doors, and natural stone counters.

 The club members have been digging and potting since last summer!



Attention all gardeners and plant lovers! You won't want to miss the Bethesda Community Garden Club's Annual Plant Sale.




Rain or shine, the 2012 sale will run from 7:00 am until 1:00 pm on Thursday, May 2nd, at the Bethesda Farm Women's Market, 7155 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD.

Metered public parking is available in the lot behind the market.



Find wonderful buys on a large selection of perennials grown in members' well-tended gardens, plus herbs,vegetables, annuals, native plants, shrubs, and vines. Novices and experts alike can pose their gardening questions to knowledgeable garden club members on site.

There is still time to donate plants from your garden.  If you have any plants to donate please contact us for information on where to deliver the plants.  During the next week, we also could use volunteers' help identifying and marking plants.

Proceeds benefit various community projects, including landscaping at Bethesda and Davis libraries and a Montgomery College scholarship in landscape technology. Plan now to support the Bethesda Garden Club Annual Plant Sale -- celebrating 90 years of community service:
