Ripped Off! Robbed! Plagiarized!
Here's one solution.
If that seems too extreme here's a couple of nifty tools you can use to catch crooks who lift your confent, whether it be your photos or words, and then try to pass them off as their own.
Tin Eye works like this:
"TinEye is a reverse image search engine. You can submit an image to TinEye to find out where it came from, how it is being used, if modified versions of the image exist, or to find higher resolution versions.
TinEye is the first image search engine on the web to use image identification technology rather than keywords, meta data or watermarks. It is free to use for non-commercial searching."
TinEye also has a plug in for Firefox. Just install it and then you can put your cursor over an image, right click to bring up TinEye, and then scan it to find photo thieves.
CopyScape does pretty much what you can do a 'quick & dirty' Google search for but takes it a few steps further. You can use the free version of CopyScape or sign up for the premium search option for just a nickle a search, Yep, that's right, you can still actually buy something for 5 cents.
One of the most plagiarized things on my website is my "40 Free or inexpensive tips can make your home show better, sell faster, and put more money in your pocket at closing." including the title. ;)
Here's how CopyScapes tracks down everyone using those 40 tips.
I just pasted the list of tips into CopyScape
Click the "Search Internet" button to the right of the copy and CopyScape goes to work.
And we find "21 Internet results found for the text you pasted (1,172 words). Click "Compare Text" next to a result below to see your content highlighted."
And just picking one at random:
So copyScape says that 95% of the 1,172 words I pasted in the search box appears on this website exactly as highlighted. It's actually almost 100%, for some reason CopyScape sometimes doesn't highlight all the copied words but I checked the text on the website this copy appears and it's 99.5% identical to the copy I wrote and pasted on my website several years ago. Pretty good indication that's not something these folks wrote on their own.
Even though CopyScape says there are 21 separate websites that have my copy on them, several are friends I gave permission to use those tips. The rest are simply people that have helped themselves to my work and are now passing it off as their own. A few of the more clueless ones even went to far as to install their own copyright devices on the copied work, I guess so no one would steal it from them. "Copyright 2008-2011" appears on one of my plagiarized pages.
CopyScape also has a product called CopySentry that continually monitors the web for copies of your content and then emails you when it finds a match (copy of your content). $4.95 a month; not a bad price for some peace of mind.
So to see where your work might have migrated to, give TinEye and CopyScape a try and you may be surprised to see how many "fans" you have out there. ;)
