Fire & Police Safety this Summer in Bronxville NY 10709
Hillary Sheperd, Co-Owner ~ Servpro of Scarsdale / Mount Vernon, NY (Servpro of Scarsdale / Mount Vernon)

Police & Firefighters are always looking for ways to support safety in Westchester County towns like our Eastchester NY 10709

fire police safety water flood damage eastchester ny 10709I don't know about everyone else driving around in this heat, but our crews and my family have noticed a bigger police presence in town.  Here's why, courtesy of a story by Zak Fiella in Eastchester's Daily Voice..the best!

"Click it or Tick it" is a statewide initiative to get us to Buckly Up in New York, so our local police are doing their jobs.

Through this coming weekend and since May 20th, the Police Department has checkpoints set up and it's all about safety.  A dear friend of mine lost her handsome young husband when he was ejected from his BMW.  His rather new car had AIRBAGS that would have saved his face...his life.  He had swurved to avoid a teen driver after they ran a stop sign, hit some grass with late night dew on it and slammed into a tree...a seatbelt that night would have made this a miracle and not a nightmare story about my widowed friend.

So, we're down from nearly 100 unbuckled drivers in recent years and are doing better in Westchester.  But, Fiella's reporting and my data search note that crash records show more unbuckled drivers and passengers at night.  What?!  The Eastchester Police Department continues to find drivers with their belts on at their evening hour stops...and, can we have another, "Duh?!!"

I'm all for the checkpoints and just fear that stupid people are breeding...God bless, but wow.  If you approach a police check, you may want to put the phone down with that unsent text, hang up if you don't have a blue tooth and make sure that you're clothed and buckled up  Not YOU, Activerain makers!

However, we know that these checkpoints can strike fear in some hearts, the guilty and unaware people (please stay off the roads, if that's the case.) So, through this weekend, the month and throughout your lives, just buckle up Eastchester.

See you at Carvel's for a cone....because if this heatwave keeps up, it's time to break the diet!

All the best,

~ Hillary

Spring Clean that Mold Situation in your home in Eastchester NY 10708
Hillary Sheperd, Co-Owner ~ Servpro of Scarsdale / Mount Vernon, NY (Servpro of Scarsdale / Mount Vernon)
Spring is in the air, so it's time to address that mold situation in your home or business -- or, in a client's property -- in Eastchester, NY 10708 It's the ultimate in Spring Cleaning, getting rid of excessive amounts of mildew, or certain types of mold that the EPA says may present health concerns. It is essential for your young children and/or elderly relatives in the home, to address obvious mold issues in your basement or attic. A coat of bleach will not do it, only a fungacide and removal can end mold growth in your home or business in Eastchester, NY 10708. Also, you may spread mold spores all over the home, after they were nice and tucked in down in your basement or crawl space. Let professionals conduct a mold removal and remediation, especially if you have "visible mold" on walls, floors or in closets and enclosed spaces. Usually, a water damages can cause mold growth in your home or business, so it is important to have your water damage cleaned promptly and professionally. Our inches of rain in just 24 hours last week may have brought moisture into your home. Get a dehumidifier going and set it at 55 rh, or relative humidity. This may prevent mold growth over time. Signs of the presence of excessive mold include: - The presence of visible mold ~ can be green, black or even rainbow colors. - Strong, musty odors. - Any evidence of past moisture problems that might have caused undetected mold growth. - Excessive humidity. Mold Damage Removal: If you think you might have a mold problem, call us for some home environmentalist's contact numbers. It's not very expensive to have your home or business tested for mold spores in the air. It also helps restoration companies like ours to pinpoint an exact mold mitigation plan. Beware of companies that both "test for mold" and mitigate or remove it. That's a conflict of interest and unethical, to test your own mold remediation. Not cool or protocol; it's better to have an independent hydrologist / enviromental specialist test for the type of mold and extent of the "spore count." Then, bring in pros like our background checked crews to remove it based on the type and amount of mold contamination. In most water damage situations, mold growth is not a problem, and SERVPRO Franchise Professionals can safely restore your home or business to preloss condition. The need to address the mold removal can only be determined by an on-site, indoor environmental inspection. Mold Remediation: In some situations an indoor air quality professional will be required to create a restoration plan for your home. SERVPRO is experienced at carrying out the assigned mold remediation plan and working to make it "Like it Never Even Happened."

MOLD SPRING CLEANING IN YOUR HOME OR BUSINESS ~ Eastchester NY 10709
Hillary Sheperd, Co-Owner ~ Servpro of Scarsdale / Mount Vernon, NY (Servpro of Scarsdale / Mount Vernon)

We remove Mold and Mildew in homes and business in Westchester NY, including Eastchester 10709

mold mildew remove odor clean basement attic professional licensed servpro eastchester ny 10709 westchester countySpring is in the air, so it may be a good time to address that mold situation in your home or business -- or at a client's property -- in Westchester County.  Mold walkthroughs are usually "by appointment" and are not considered an emergency.

Mold growth is microscopic and takes time to grow and cause that "mildew odor."  Also, this fungus growth could be linked to a water damage or leak from months or even yearsago.  Just call us for an appointment.

At our restoration company, walkthroughs for mold are complimentary for home and business owners.  For closings and realtors, we can document the mold and mildew concerns on paper, with a small fee.

mold mildew remove odor clean basement attic professional licensed Servpro eastchester ny 10709 westchester countyExcessive amounts of mold and certain types of this fungus growth may present health concerns, especially for children under 12 years as well as the elderly and anyone who is immune suppressed. It is important to the health of your family or company staff to address mold issues.  It's also important to stop mold from growing onto upholstery and into your wall studs, to protect your property from further damage.  (This picture is courtesy of Jim Rood at Lighthouse Environmental and it was taken behind a child's dresser in their bedroom!)

Your mold issue may be a matter for an environmental specialist first, who will test the air for "mold spores," even if there is no visible mold in your home or business.  Then, when envirnomentalists like Jim Rood at Lighthouse Environmental get their tests and lab results back, they let us know how to proceed and what type of mold(s) we are dealing with at the property.

So, you will want to arrange for professionals like us, to conduct mold removal and remediation as soon as the presence of spores and type(s) of mold are identified.  It's not worth a health problem in your family or at your business with staff, who have allergies or asthma already.

Water damages from pipe leaks and "accidents," like this video -- to storms like Hurricanes Irene and Sandy could be causing mold growth in your property today.  Mold grows microscopically over time after starting just 24 to 48 hours after a water damage.  So, it's important to have a water damage cleaned and dried thoroughly, promptly and professionally.

mold mildew remove odor clean basement attic professional licensed servpro eastchester ny 10709 westchester countyIt's a lot less expensive for you and your insurance carrier to clean a water damage and dry your structure, than have a mold mitigation situation with higher costs later on.

  • Strong, musty odor

In most water damage situations, mold growth is not a problem and restoration companies like our Servpro of Scarsdale / Mount Vernon can safely restore your home or business to preloss condition.  We have staff who are background checked and uniformed, for your peace of mind.

Seasons of Change

Seasons of Change

This week feels like the seasons are changing. We let go of summer; flip-flops, t-shirts, skirts and shorts. Let's go outdoor activities like sailing and swimming. We switched to soccer and football. We reorganize our closets making room for fall winter clothes.

All this begs the question: Should you move during the fall and winter? If you're selling, it may be the best time. You're not competing with as many properties. The winter buyer is a serious buyer. The same can be said of the winter seller. You're serious about making a move.

Enjoy the crisp, clear, crackly days of fall!

NOR'EASTER NEMO DAMAGE IN EASTCHESTER NY 10709 ~ BASEMENTS MAY FLOOD!
Hillary Sheperd, Co-Owner ~ Servpro of Scarsdale / Mount Vernon, NY (Servpro of Scarsdale / Mount Vernon)

Flooded basements and storm damaged homes and businesses may follow Winter Storm Nemo, even in Eastchester NY 10709

Nemo winter storm flood wind damage eastchester ny 10709 westchester nyHere we go again…shades of wind and snow storm that flooded and damaged homes and businesses in Westchester County in 2010.  It’s reminding some local forecasters of that damaging storm because of the amount of snow expected overnight Friday into Saturday.

This storm is being called a “historic blizzard” and will sweep across our part of the Mid-Atlantic and track north to hammer Boston this Friday.  It’s a biggie because the storm now dubbed NEMO will bring up to two feet of snow to NYC, plus rain and tropical storm force winds!  So, it’s expected to be a storm of "historic" proportions, beginning with light flurries on Thursday night and lasting through Saturday morning in Eastchester, NY 10709 and the entire region.

Along the way, Nemo is expected to dump snow, sleet, rain and hurricane-force winds in coastal states from Connecticut to Maine this weekend.  We are being advised to start stocking up on food, batteries and supplies because things could get pretty bad out there and in our homes or businesses.

Here are some answers to questions you may have – without being a scaredy cat here -- about “Winter Storm Nemo,” our first nor'easter of 2013:

Nemo winter storm flood wind damage eastchester ny 10709 westchester ny
Snow Amounts?:   Southern New England is expected to be in the eye of this storm, may get 24 inches of snow by Saturday.  Areas of Long Island are under a “Blizzard Watch,” as are Connecticut and Rhode Island, according to national weather reports.   The lower Hudson Valley is expected to get about 6 to 18 inches because we are on the “snow and rain line” along with New York City -- as of 6p Thursday night at my office checking #'s.

One report  has Nemo matching the force and impact of the historic blizzard of 1978 – that dumped two feet of snow throughout New York and New England and had hurricane force winds.  Other weather analysts say Nemo could be “one of the 10 most powerful storms in the history of this region.”

Forecasters Damage Predictions:  Forecasters are warning about "widespread power outages with winds of this force," including the pros at weather.com.  Highways could be paralyzed, especially near coastal areas, so plan your commute accordingly.  Our neighbors in Connecticut and Long Island communities could see coastal flooding, just as they recover from “Sandy.”  In fact, some forecasters are giving “Nemo” 10 out of 10 on the national winter storm index.  Count on lots of delays on highways, bridges and at airports, in and out of the Mid-Atlantic and New England states, through Sunday.

Nemo winter storm flood wind damage eastchester ny 10709 westchester nyApparently, Nemo is a “doozie” because it’s the result of two pressure systems colliding, including on traveling east and picking lake effect snow along the Great Lakes.  The other system dumped inches of rain and is tracking fast up the East Coast from the south.

Schedule?:    The northern half of this “perfect winter storm” will move through Michigan and move into upstate New York on Thursday night.  By Friday night, we need to be prepared for heavy snow, rain and tropical force winds that will pound  New England.  That’s after Nemo the Nor’Easter tracks across Eastchester, NY 10709 and hammers other towns and hamlets in the Lower Hudson Valley. These conditions will continue through Saturday morning.

A name by any other storm….the name may be cute, but this storm may not be by Saturday:  Back in 2010, our restoration company staff called that winter snow event “The storm with no name.”

Not very fun or sexy, right?  It helps state and local officials as well as first and 2nd responders like us to have a name…by any other name.  It’s shorter to have a one word storm name, plus there is no confusion about the storm in conversation, its unique “personality” and differences between one winter/summer storm or another.  This one was apparently named “Nemo" because it is expected to be really nasty!

Flooded basements and storm damaged homes and businesses may follow Winter Storm Nemo, even in Eastchester NY 10709

"The Street Where You Live" featuring Whitehall Road, Eastchester, NY

Interlaken Gardens
Whitehall Road, Eastchester, NY

Here is the first post in the series The Street Where You Live. I am starting with the streets in Interlaken Gardens, a beautiful garden style cooperative apartment complex located in Eastchester, NY just 30 minutes from Grand Central Station.

Whitehall Road is a dead end off California Road. Easy to find, it is the first street on the right coming in from White Plains Post Road or the last street on the left coming in from California Road. Most of the buildings on this street are only two stories. A unique feature is backing up to Eastchester High School. The school track is at the end of Whitehall Road. It is wonderful to hear the sounds of the games being played throughout the school year.

Addresses 1 through 9 are all two story buildings and have the high school behind them. Across the street, addresses 16 through 26 feature a central courtyard while 6 through 14 feature the duplex apartments. 6 Whitehall Road has two of only six three bedroom apartments found in Interlaken with the first floor unit sporting a beautiful side patio that is enjoyed by all coming by. Most of the first floor units have outdoor patios that are part of the common grounds. Addresses 2 and 4 feature beautiful landscaping that offers privacy to the patios facing these buildings. The walk to your front door is serene.

In total, 56 families call Whitehall Road, Eastchester, NY home.

September-A Time of Change
Catherine C Capasso (Catherine Cornelia Real Estate)

Each calendar month carries a distinct meaning. September has a few;

  • Back to school.
  • Labor Day Weekend, the last three day weekend of the summer and a signal that the laid back days of summer vacation are over; time to get serious about work again.
  • Days begin to get shorter, nights are cooler and trees begin to rustle more as they dry out and prepare for their winter sleep.
  • Wardrobes begin to change. We exchange our flip flops for closed toes; tanks and tees for long sleeves and cardigans; too cool for shorts we head out in slacks.
  • We soak in every last bit of sun and relish the last few days at the beach.
This is September.

One more thing about September, it is one of the best months to buy real estate.

My passion is a remarkable lake front community known as Interlaken Gardens. 44 acres of green grass, private beach, garden style cooperative apartments offering the benefits of home ownership. If this isn't enough, you can get to Grand Central in 30 to 36 minutes on most trains leaving from the Crestwood train station. Lake Isle Town Park offers country club amenities at a fraction of the cost. Swim in one of five pools, play tennis and learn from the pros, golf 18 holes, take lessons, join The Twilighters, the ladies who golf on Tuesday nights from May through August.

What are your thoughts on September? We'd love to hear from you!
