Not Your Daddy’s Golf Club

Blitz 2 The Barrel

Only in Bend Oregon would you have an event like the “Blitz 2 The Barrel”–a ball-busting mountain bike downhill featuring 35 professional riders (by invitation only), racing from Mt. Bachelor to the 10 Barrel Brewing Co. in downtown Bend, with $20,000 in prize money at stake.

The course began at Wanoga Sno-park (near Mt. Bachelor), headed down the Funner and COD trails, before crossing Skyline Ranch Road, and entering Tetherow.

Only at Tetherow

While proclaimed “the best course you can play” (Golfweek, 2009-2012), and “#3 of America’s Best New Courses ” (Golf Digest), Tetherow is not your daddy’s golf club! On the evening of the race, as the shadows lengthened and the vibrant colors began to soften, the two-tiered driving range at Tetherow looked more like a rock concert scene. Children frolicked, using the sloping terrain as a giant sledding hill.

As music pounded, racers had the option of straight-lining a huge jump

or taking a more circuitous (and safer) route that added roughly 30 seconds (and incurred good-natured “boos” from the crowd) to the course.

Bunny-hop the Sand Trap at Tetherow

To the delight of spectators–already enjoying libations, rock music, and the early summer weather– the riders then proceeded across the par 3 course at Tetherow, either leaping over or riding through a sand trap

One last pass across the David Kidd-designed course, and the racers were headed downtown to 10 Barrel.

Tetherow–A Modern Perspective on a Golf Community

Contrary to the words of Mark Twain, a great game of golf is still a wonderful way to spend a sunny afternoon, yet, this event (Blitz 2 The Barrel) helped folks to realize that this is not “your Daddy’s golf club,” and that the grounds at Tetherow are ideal for a variety of different events.

What a great place to live!

Elk in Bend Oregon

Elk in Bend

I’ve been working pretty hard, patiently  trying to train my master. You know, the general obedience stuff . . . walking on a leash, staying, not rushing through doors, not acting too aggressively.

We’ve attended group sessions together and opted for individual instruction too. He’s coming along well, but still a work in process. He’s pretty set in his ways . . .  what’s that old adage?

The Daily Walk

We suited up, I wagged my tail perfunctorily, and we headed out for our daily stroll.  I thought briefly of my departed older sibling, Rocco; like him before me, I’ve become a bit of an expert on golf communities in Bend.

. . . out through the trees alongside the 7th. hole at Broken Top. I sniffed some rocks, peed on a bush, and sort of lackadaisically sauntered after a couple of lame birds.  All the while, keeping my master tight off my right flank.

As we walked, my master talked (he has a way of doing that) . . . a diverse array of subjects–Bend real estate, the dearth of quality amongst GOP presidential candidates, the new iPad3, the merits of the Rocketballz vs. the proven R11 driver. I pretended to listen and marched on.

We crossed over to Tetherow, marveling simultaneously at all the new construction

and the quality of the David Kidd-designed course. My master let me off my leash, and I sprinted ahead (not too far . . . I had to let him think he was still in control) in unfettered joy.

Bend Elk’s Club

A strange rather fecund scent in the air, and I pulled up rapidly. There, out in the trees, just off Tetherow’s  twelfth hole (the par 5 carved out of the rocks) stood one of the largest beasts I’ve ever seen.

And behind her stood another, and another . . .  perhaps 50 in all.

I’d never seen anything like it! I was nonplussed. I started to move forward, straining against my collar . . . not sure if I was in friendly mode or protective. My master, quick as a cat (pardon the expression), slipped on my leash and gave me a tug  as a battleship-sized cow and an aged bull with broken antlers (I didn’t even want to think about how he broke them)

likewise stepped forward, as if to meet my youthful canine challenge.

We turned towards home. My master droned on again about the “wonders of nature,” the beauty of the Bend lifestyle, and the fact that we’d just encountered an incredible herd of elk not 400 meters from our front door. I think I’m happy to live here too.

Tetherow . . . A Dream Comes True

Post image for Tetherow . . . A Dream Comes True

The following is an excerpt from the Bend Bulletin; it was written by Carrie Ramoz.

Tetherow . . . A Dream Comes True

2017 seemed like the distant future to Bend’s Tim Williams and his family. When they planned out their future, it looked like 2017 was the year they could fulfill their desire of living in Tetherow, a growing community on Bend’s Westside. Patiently waiting, they spent three seasons as guests of the Tetherow Golf Club, enjoying the Scottish links style golf,

outstanding dining and a variety of social and family events. As the young family grew, so did their eagerness to live in such a convenient, growing area.
In 2011, the Williams family learned about Tetherow’s Jr. Executive Membership, which is available to those under 46 and includes a family membership to the Athletic Club of Bend for just $390 a month. It was the ideal opportunity to join Tetherow. When they saw an opportunity to purchase a beautiful homesite at a great price in late 2011, they realized they could build a home

and actually make their dream come true within the next year instead of having to wait!

The Club at Tetherow

“The entire staff is so cohesive and you can tell they really enjoy their jobs. It makes such a difference when the staff is happy at a Club. We also love the other families living there, and the views and prime location to everything Bend has to offer just can’t be beat,” said Williams.

New Construction at Tetherow

This budding community has experienced impressive growth the past 12 months. Tetherow welcomed 30 new families into the membership last year alone! With its ideal location – nestled between the Southwest edge of Bend and the Deschutes National Forest – the full Cascade Mountain views and award-winning golf, this renaissance is hardly a surprise.
Since January of 2011, 12 real estate contracts have been written, eight of which have closed with a property sale while the remaining four are pending. Construction begins on three custom homes between now and May. Additionally, local builders Greg Welch

and Ryan Duble are both designing showcase homes that will begin construction this spring. They will boast mountain and fairway views, and range from $599,000 to $775,000. With a blend of primary residences and second homes, Tetherow is growing in leaps and bounds.

Tripleknot Townhomes at Tetherow

Tetherow’s Tripleknot Townhomes, which are in the first stage of construction, have already sold the model and construction should be complete by April, when the golf course opens for play.

A variety of membership options are available at Tetherow, with or without real estate purchase. The David McLay Kidd course is open April through October, while the Tetherow Grill is open year round, seven days a week.

Tetherow . . . Green on the Greens

Tetherow’s Commitment

Building on a commitment to ensure environmentally sound philosophies and practices, Tetherow is not only one of the area’s only environmentally friendly golf courses, but it has extended that “green” mentality to the new custom homes under construction.  “Our vision from the onset was to create a world class golf experience that was in harmony with nature,”

stated Tetherow managing partner, Chris van der Velde.  Tetherow is the only Audubon Signature Sanctuary Certified golf course in Oregon, and was also recently recognized for environmental stewardship by the Golf Course Superintendent’s Association of America (GCSAA). “The homes we are building at Tetherow mirror that vision,” said van der Velde.

The new homes being built at Tetherow within the Glen neighborhood  will be certified as both Earth Advantage and ENERGY STAR.  They earn that certification by ensuring increased energy efficiency, limited impact on land, thoughtful land use practices, use of safe and durable materials, and reduced water consumption.

“My vision is to create a neighborhood that is built using sustainable practices,” remarked Erin van der Velde, project manager.  “We want to create a community that is mindful of our surroundings and more considerate of our resources.  In fact, we are working towards being the first Earth Advantage certified community in the state of Oregon.”

Homes at Tetherow

One home at Tetherow, expected to be completed by April, sits on a corner home site amongst tall Ponderosa Pines. The urban-ranch home has three bedrooms, 3.5 baths and a den.

It was specifically designed to enhance the features of its location and the outdoors.  The home at Tetherow offers three terraces for outdoor living: a summer terrace, a winter terrace with a kitchen garden, and a terrace with a built-in fireplace. The home at Tetherow is 2618 square feet and is offered at $699,000.

Another home is located on a cul-de-sac lot with spectacular mountain and golf course views facing west/southwest. This updated lodge-style home is nestled in a stand of mature Ponderosa Pines.

This home lends itself to a feeling of openness with a large great room, spacious dining area with serving bar and a chef-style gourmet kitchen.  There are two patios for outdoor living and entertaining.  This home is offered at $879,000.

Tetherow . . . Earth Advantage

Being Earth Advantage certified means a home has met the criteria Earth Advantage sets forth for insulation, building materials and methods, and energy and water conservation.  Recent market studies have shown that in many areas, certified new homes sell for up to ten percent more than conventional homes.  Even in a slow economy, the market share of certified homes versus conventional homes has continued to rise.  Combining these benefits with the energy efficiency standards of ENERGY STAR ensures these homes exhibit superior performance and environmental responsibility.

“Sustainability is important to many of our clients,” opined Deb Tebbs, owner at Cascade Sotheby’s International Realty.  Tetherow is seeing a lot more traffic and interest in purchasing and building custom homes.  In fact, three home sites are currently under contract.  “Tetherow is a special community within Bend.  Our onsite sales team is super  excited about the growth and changes the new year will bring.”
