Why Do People Live Here?
Oak Forest is located north of the 610 Loop and east of 290. Oak Forest was established in 1947 by Oak Forest Realty Corporation, owned by Frank Sharp, a developer who would later establish Sharpstown. Oak Forest Realty Corporation built houses only in Section 1 (Golf Dr to Oak Forest Dr, and Du Barry Ln to W 43rd St). Sharp would later develop the neighborhood for 17 additional sections by building streets and installing utility lines, but left the home construction to other contractors.
In 2010 the Houston Press named Oak Forest one of the city's "Most Underrated Neighborhoods". During that year 226 house sales occurred in that area.
Some folks refer to Oak Forest as the new West University. Although not as prominent as its big sister Garden Oaks, Oak Forest offers nice size lots, at cheaper prices with the same easy access to major freeways, shopping and dining.

Because the homes here were initially built for veterans of WWII, the neighborhood features a large majority of modest ranch style homes that were initially sold for $8-$10k. The Oak Forest area has around 5,500 homes today. In just 5 years, from 2005 to 2010 the price per square foot appreciated from around $100 to almost $140. Some of the homes that were not torn down when new development of the area began were instead renovated.
The Oak Forest Neighborhood Library is operated by the Houston Public Library, which is located at West 43rd Street. The Candlelight Community Center, also in the area, has an indoor gym, a lighted outdoor sports field, and a half mile biking and hiking trail. You can also find the Northwest Branch of the YMCA, near this area of Houston.
The Houston ISD is in charge of the Oak Forest area. Since Oak Forest is so large there are many elementary schools here including: Oak Forest Elementary, Garden Oaks Elementary, Kate Smith Elementary, Stevens Elementary, and several others. There are two middle schools in the area, one being Frank Black Middle School and the other is Clifton Middle School. The two high schools in the area are Waltrip High School and Scarborough High School. Learn more about the Houston Independent School District on our website.
