The Festival is being held as usual at the District’s Outdoor Learning Center (OLC). The OLC is located in Old or Historic Katy with its address being 6301 Stadium Dr. Katy TX. Katy ISD Outdoor Learning Center is situated on 35 acres of land which is kept in its natural state. All the building blend into the natural setting. The festival concept is for students to experience life as it was for early Texan’s. The buildings include history and science classrooms mixed in with a barn and a blacksmith shop. Attendees will get to experience the OLC being transformed into a 1800’s Village complete with numerous time period activities and demonstrations such as hand quilting, Blacksmith demo, ragdoll creation, honey bee keeping, woodworking, farm animals, pioneer games, archery, cheese making and several others. All visitors will have the option to walk nature trails, visit several of exhibits at the science and history classrooms and visit the nature pond. If you want more information go to this web site. I wish I had the time this coming Saturday to attend as this sounds like a wonderful learning experience. If anyone attends please let me know what you thought of the Festival. Katy ISD always puts on first class events of any nature and this should be an excellent Festival. Katy Prairie Conservancy (KPC) January 2015 offers “Realm of the Eagle” Katy Prairie Conservancy (KPC) will hold  program titled “Realm of the Eagle” Saturday January 17, 2015 at the Matt Cook Memorial Wildlife Viewing Platform on Warren Lake. The program starts at 10 AM and lasts until 11:30AM. Each winter season finds bald eagles soaring high above the Katy prairie. The Katy prairie is an ideal location for bird watching of all types due to the wetlands, prairie and creeks in this whole area. The cost is inexpensive at $3.00 per person Registration is obviously necessary and can be done here. A map to indicate direction to the Wildlife Viewing Platform is on the same page as the registration. This is a program I really want to attend and I will see if I can fit it into my Saturday schedule. I would enjoy seeing and taking pictures of an eagle(s). I had no idea Katy had eagles to view. Robert (Bob) Gilbert, Your Katy TX Real Estate Expert (Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Anderson Properties)
Eagle Radio Station Houston Holds Radiothon at Katy Mills Mall December 2014 The Eagle Radio Station in Houston ( 106.9 and 107.5)  is holding a Radiothon at Katy Mills Mall on Friday December 5 from 5 AM till 7 PM and Saturday December 6, 2014 from 8 AM till 6 PM. The title is “Eagle Rocks for a Cure”.This event is raising money for the children’s cancer unit at Texas Children’s Hospital. The Hospital  has a facility in Katy located on the I-10 feeder road at Barker Cypress. This station will be broadcasting directly from Katy Mill Mall in Katy as they did last year. Above picture of banner outside Katy Mills Mall taken by and copyrighted by Bob Gilbert with all rights reserved. The Dean & Rog morning show told us the hospital has several inpatient kids who are being treated for cancer right now and this situation happens all year long. Inpatient meaning they stay at the hospital and do not go home. There are many other children who receive treatment at their facility on an outpatient basis. Anyone wanting to donate to children cancer patients at Texas Children’s Hospital can go here to make an online donation. It is very difficult for me personally to think about these poor children who are battling cancer as it always brings tears to my eyes as it is doing right now. I know I am getting soft in my old age! LOL.. Here is what the hospital tells everyone concerning donations just in case you are unsure about this hospital: “Funds raised through the radiothon support Texas Children's Cancer Center's mission to provide personalized, high-quality, family-centered care to children, adolescents and young adults with cancer and blood disorders. The Cancer Center treats more than 1900 new patients each year, making it one of the largest pediatric cancer and hematology centers in the country.” Pay it forward by making a donation right now and help children who really need assistance and love! Early Alert: Fall Back on Sunday November 2, 2014 in Katy and Beyond
Robert (Bob) Gilbert, Your Katy TX Real Estate Expert (Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Anderson Properties)
Early Alert: Fall Back on Sunday November 2, 2014 in Katy and Beyond I am writing to blog as an early alert reminding everyone in advance of the time change which will happen this coming Sunday. It is very easy to forget and obviously havoc can ensue.  We all live crazy lives based on time. It is the time of year to think about the end of Daylight Savings Time (DST) and setting your clocks, watches and timepieces back one hour. On Sunday November 2, 2014 at  2 AM officially, daylight savings time ends and all timepieces need to be reset one hour back. I always use the old saying of “ Spring Forward and Fall Back” to remember what we have to do with setting the time. I advocate setting timepieces back when you go to bed unless you plan to be awake at 2 AM. I already know I will not be awake at 2 AM. Some countries around the World such as Russia and Japan do not observe Daylight Saving time while in Brazil, some parts observe DST and others do not not. The US government does not mandate states to observe DST and residents in the Navajo Native American  Reservation, Arizona, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands do not follow DST. Image  courtesy of Bing free to share, modify and use pictures. The origin of DST actually believe it or not goes all the way back to Ben Franklin who coined the phrase “ early to bed and early to rise. While he was ambassador to France, Mr. Franklin, who was certainly way ahead of his own era in so many ways, figured out how beneficial it would be to make better use of daylight. The US government standardised DST in 1918 but allowed states to decide whether to observe or not. During WW II the US made DST mandatory to save valuable resources. Since the end of WW II  the observance by all the states has been optional.  However, during the Arab oil embargo of 1973-1974, the US once again made DST mandatory for the entire winter period of time. The saving were about a 1 percent decrease in the usage of electricity. Studies done in recent years show no savings or an actually an increase in energy consumption occurs during DST months while other research studies indicates the opposite. I am not sure what to believe. Anyone out there got an opinion? I personally like DST as it really helps with my Real Estate business and doing chores around the home. I can still show properties late in the afternoon and during the early evening during the months of  DST. I can do things outside or in garage. I also find it very depressing to drive home in mostly darkness during the early evening once DST ends. Do you like DST?
