Early Alert: Fall Back on Sunday November 2, 2014 in Katy and Beyond

Early Alert: Fall Back on Sunday November 2, 2014 in Katy and Beyond

I am writing to blog as an early alert reminding everyone in advance of the time change which will happen this coming Sunday. It is very easy to forget and obviously havoc can ensue.  We all live crazy lives based on time. It is the time of year to think about the end of Daylight Savings Time (DST) and setting your clocks, watches and timepieces back one hour. On Sunday November 2, 2014 at  2 AM officially, daylight savings time ends and all timepieces need to be reset one hour back. I always use the old saying of “ Spring Forward and Fall Back” to remember what we have to do with setting the time. I advocate setting timepieces back when you go to bed unless you plan to be awake at 2 AM. I already know I will not be awake at 2 AM.

Some countries around the World such as Russia and Japan do not observe Daylight Saving time while in Brazil, some parts observe DST and others do not not. The US government does not mandate states to observe DST and residents in the Navajo Native American  Reservation, Arizona, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands do not follow DST.

The origin of DST actually believe it or not goes all the way back to Ben Franklin who coined the phrase “ early to bed and early to rise. While he was ambassador to France, Mr. Franklin, who was certainly way ahead of his own era in so many ways, figured out how beneficial it would be to make better use of daylight.

The US government standardised DST in 1918 but allowed states to decide whether to observe or not. During WW II the US made DST mandatory to save valuable resources. Since the end of WW II  the observance by all the states has been optional.  However, during the Arab oil embargo of 1973-1974, the US once again made DST mandatory for the entire winter period of time. The saving were about a 1 percent decrease in the usage of electricity. Studies done in recent years show no savings or an actually an increase in energy consumption occurs during DST months while other research studies indicates the opposite. I am not sure what to believe. Anyone out there got an opinion?

I personally like DST as it really helps with my Real Estate business and doing chores around the home. I can still show properties late in the afternoon and during the early evening during the months of  DST. I can do things outside or in garage. I also find it very depressing to drive home in mostly darkness during the early evening once DST ends. Do you like DST?

There will be over 20 retailers and eateries attending and looking for both part time and full time positions.I would imagine many of these positions are seasonal and the companies are looking for extra help this Christmas or holiday season. The companies attending include but are not limited to Victoria Secret, Coach Factory Store, Buckle Forever 21, Shoe place, Steve Madden and several others.

These companies will be prepared to review a candidate's resumes and do interviews on the spot. It is recommended all candidates arrive early and bring resumes and identification papers.

I try to pass on to my readers information about Job Fairs as it is a priority item of mine. It is no fun to be out of work or underemployed.

I can write several pages on what candidates should do or not do but I will keep this short. Dress appropriately and have a great attitude. Turn off all cell phones, tablets, etc. and be prepared to answer as well as ask questions. Leave the Dude stuff in your car! Good Luck!

Firethorne Katy TX Holding 22nd Annual Triathlon

The 22 nd Annual Katy Triathlon will be hosted once again by the Katy Rotary Club and the event will be held in and around the Firethorne neighborhood in Katy Texas. This event will take place on Sunday September 28, 2014 and the starting time is 7:00 AM. and will last until around 11 AM.

Firethorne is a Master Planned Community located on FM 1463 about 2-3 miles south of I-10 and this event has been held in Firethorne for several years. I have written blogs about this Triathlon in the past as it is a huge local event which all the proceeds benefit local scholarships.

This Triathlon will consist of a 13 mile bike run, 500 meter swim and 3 mile run. Individuals as well as teams are competing. There are several brackets of competitors including the most competitive where an individual would have had to place in the top three in another sanctioned event during 2014 in order to qualify. Firethorne Triathlon  is USA Triathlon sanctioned and governed by USA Triathlon rules.

The Rotary  Club took over this competition in 1998 and since then has raised a substantial amount funds used  for college scholarship given to local area graduating seniors in Katy ISD.

I have been told by several individuals over the years this is a very exciting race and spectators are welcome to watch. As I have said in prior years,  I would advise leaving very early early as I am unsure where everyone will park. All attendees should be ready to walk a long way to observe the event.

You can register online by going here.

Answer to Brain Teaser from August 6, 2014

Answer to Brain Teaser from August 6, 2014

On September 19, 1893 New Zealand Governor Lord Glasgow signed a new election act into the law of the land. This was a landmark piece of legislation as New Zealand became the FIRST self governing country in the entire world to allow universal suffrage to all citizens. Women now had the right to vote in parliamentary elections. This landmark law was achieved as the result of years of work led by Kate Sheppard.

Thank you all for commenting on my post yesterday and a couple folks got this answer correct and big shout to them. The treadmills at Lifetime Fitness in Katy have running courses where the film is of cool places to visit and run for you to watch while working out. One area is the South Island run and this is where I learned New Zealand was the first.

After seeing all of these filmed runs numerous times now, I have to say I do want to travel to New Zealand as it is on my bucket list. I have to walk very fast on the treadmill as due to hip surgery I am not suppose to run anymore. I have been fortunate enough to have traveled to Australia for one trip and it was fabulous with one of numerous highlights included night sailing on Sydney Harbor.
