Aunt Nellie and the old Cornish School on Roy Street.

One of my favorite drives over Capitol Hill is up or down Roy Street past my alma mater, Cornish College of the Arts. I go this way often on my way to and from Eastlake. When it’s busy the narrowness will challenge your inner city driving skills and lately I’m dodging potholes I fear will swallow my Ford Explorer, yet I love driving through my old neighborhood and past the school.

This beautiful old Spanish Style stucco was built in 1921 and it reminds me of several I knew growing up with its high ceilings and plaster walls, the leaded glass windows with creaky hardwood floors and radiator heat. I didn’t know the schools founder, Nellie Cornish (1876 - 1956). I’ve been around for a while, but not that long.

Nellie Cornish was an accomplished pianist but her true calling was to become a very gifted teacher with a vision. She moved to Seattle in 1900 and founded her first school in 1914 about a mile south of here, down Broadway at Pine.

The Cornish School from the very beginning was about the interrelatedness of the arts. She believed everyone could enrich their lives by developing their creativity from many different disciplines. Within three years the school was very successful and offered programs in music, dance, theater, and the visual arts.

Nellie had a keen eye for talent and the people she recruited (before they became household names) reads like a who’s who of 20th Century art. Some of her iconic picks were Mark Tobey, Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham and John Cage, to name but a few. If you ever took a contemporary arts class, you probably know these names.

Some of my favorite stories about the school include “Aunt Nellie” and her apartment upstairs where she lived during the 1920’s and 30’s. She invited students up for coffee and cookies and they got to hangout with many influential artists of the day.

As Martha Graham once described Nellie Cornish, "she's a small, round, plump little lady with the dynamism of a rocket."

Gilda's Club Seattle

I’ve driven past this beautiful old building at 1400 Broadway at least a thousand times over the years. It’s Gilda’s Club of Seattle and resides on the southern edge of the Pike Pine Triangle neighborhood on Capitol Hill.

Named in honor of Gilda Radner (1946 - 1989), an original cast member of the Saturday Night Live television show was truly one the great comic geniuses. She did 107 episodes between 1975 and 1980 and won an Emmy Award in 1978.

This charming 2 story with its huge front columns and facade was built in 1911. When I lived on the hill in the late 1970’s early 1980’s this part of town had known better times. Now, with the development of the Pike Pine Triangle it’s a vibrant urban neighborhood of about 15 blocks with many restaurants and bars, boutique shops, arts facilities and an eclectic mix of refurbished historic buildings like the Odd Fellows Hall and many new condominiums.

Gilda’s Club Seattle was founded by Anna Gottlieb and opened its doors in 2002. It’s a great place for families who are learning to live with cancer. At the Clubhouse they build social support structures together with members at no cost to the family, individual or friends... All are welcome.

There are around 20 active Gilda’s Clubs in the US and Canada. This wonderful nonprofit organization runs a wide variety of emotional and social support services, classes and workshops, social events, and resources for anyone with cancer including the young and old and their families and friends.
